Investing in property through SMSFs has been the growing trend for the past few years, with property being an in demand commodity. SMSFs have $500 billion in asset shares, one third of the total superannuation asset groups. 15% of these SMSF asset shares are invested in property and it is interesting to note that only 4% of the total asset shares of SMSFs are invested in real residential property, with the remaining 11% invested in commercial and non – residential investments.
Since property comprises just a small portion of the asset shares, this has been the investment of choice for SMSFs. Olivia Maragna of the Brisbane Times gives new investors a head start when investing in SMSFs, as well as things they should consider before borrowing for property investments.
